Aus der Einführung:
“Die Anfänge meines Lebens fielen ungefähr mit dem Zeitpunkt zusammen als der Zweite Weltkrieg für alle begann. Mein Vater arbeitete bei Warner Brothers. Aus meiner Kindheit in den typischen Vororten Südkaliforniens sind mir ein großer Hinterhof und das Kino am deutlichsten im Gedächnis haftengeblieben. Unsere Familie lebte für und von der Filmindustrie. Oft besuchte ich meinen Vater nach der Schule bei den Dreharbeiten … Das alles fand im Alter von 16 Jahren ein jähes Ende. Ich verließ mein Elternhaus und trat in die Marine ein. Damals kam das Scheitern in der Schule der Verbannung gleich – oder man trat in die Marine ein. Es galt als Tragödie, man war dem Untergang geweiht. Aber Fortuna trat auf den Plan, und durch puren Zufall schickte mich die Marine auf ihre Schule für Fotografie in Pensacola, Florida. Mir war es ernst, und zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben entwickelte ich ein richtiges Selbstbewusstsein. Als ich auf meinem ersten Schiff mitten im Atlanti k um drei Uhr morgens Wache stand, schaute ich zum Himmel hinauf und schrie: “Eines Tages werde ich Fotograf!”
40 Jahre später…schreie ich noch immer.
Das Leben bei der Marine war nur durch das Erlernen der Fotografie denkwürdig. Das war das einzige, woran ich glaubte und was mich interessierte. Als ich 1959 das Militär verließ, war ich mit der fotografischen Technik vertraut. Damals galt Technik als Selbstzweck: Darin sei die Kunst des Mediums selbst enthalten. Ich kehrte nach Los Angeles zurück und wollte am dortigen Art Center gewerbliche, vielleicht sogar Modefotografie studieren. Etwa zu dieser Zeit lud mich ein Freund, der an der California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco studierte, zu einer großen Fete am Wochenende ein. Es war ein tolle Party, und ich beschloss, in San Francisco zu studieren. Ich begann, die Sprache des abstrakten Expressionismus, des Jazz und der “Beat”-Lyrik zu verstehen. Es war ein große Epoche in der amerikanischen Kultur. Mit solchen Anregungen u nd Zukunftsträumen wurden wir alle erwachsen. Ich blieb weniger als ein Jahr in der Schule. Als ich eines Tages in der Market Street fotografierte, kam mir der Gedanke, dass es eine bestimmte Anzahl von Belichtungen gab zwischen dem Punkt, an dem ich mich damals befand, und dem, was ich mit der Zeit zu werden hoffte. Der direkte Weg wäre es, die Schule zu verlassen und die ganze Zeit Bilder zu schließen, und diesen Weg schlug ich ein. Gleichzeitig bekam ich einen Job als Assistent bei Dorothea Lange – eine großartige Chance. Dorothea Lange war die erste große Fotografin, die ich persönlich kennenlernen durfte. Sie sprach nicht viel, aber von ihr lernte ich, dass es der Inhalt ist, auf den es bei einer fotografie ankommt. … Eines Tages sagte sie mir, dass ihr nächster Assistent Asiate sein würde. Als ich sie nach dem Grund fragte, sagte sie: “Weil sie nicht so viel reden”. Damals nahm ich meine Leica überall hin mit. Vor allem wollte ich Bilder machen, die Gefühle hervorrufen, wi e die Fotos der von mir so sehr bewunderten großen Meister. Einmal schuate Dorothea meine Fotos an und sagte: “Dein Problem ist, dass du keinen Augangspunkt hast. Wenn du in der Drogerie Zahnpasta kaufen gehst und die Kamera mitnimmst, ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit größer, dass du eine bedeutende Fotoaufnahme machen wirst, als wenn du einfach an der Straßenecke darauf wartest, bis etwas passiert.”
Ich kehrte zur Straßenecke zurück.
Erst Jahre danach, als ich an ‘The Somnambulist’ arbeitete, habe ich endlich die Weisheit ihrer Mahnung erkannt. Seitdem habe ich immer von einem Ausgangspunkt gearbeitet. Jede Fotografie hängt mit einem Thema, das zur Diskussion steht, mit einer Serie, einem Buch zusammen. So bleiben unendlich viele Möglichkeiten, aber das Chaos lässt nach.
Nur wenige Bilder aus dieser Studienzeit haben überlebt. In den ersten Jahren war ich mit meiner Arbeit so unzufrieden, dass ich das meiste davon einfach wegwarf. Die Bilder, die ich damals
